Organi City
Organi City was born to create visual sociopolitical, cultural, emotional and ancestral discourse that subverts hierarchies from our experiences in the world. Through the human body as our primary artistic medium, we create, play, explore, nurture and challenge each other. We emphasize creation through play, ambiguity, experimentation and serendipity to investigate the human condition through collaborations, choreography, cultural authenticity, absurdity, relationships, emotions, and original voices in interdisciplinary performances.
Jonathan "JayWAN" Pattiwael is an Indonesian immigrant dancer, teacher, and choreographer from the global Hip-Hop civilization who creates cross disciplinary performances by remixing their artistic practice in breaking, hip-hop, house, indigenous dances, experimental theatre and contemporary forms to reinforce our place in the world and subvert the social order. Our work imagines an approach between choreography and theatre for social change. This hybrid of dance and theatre for social change through performance relies on varying levels of audience interplay and social interactions which began as an experiment during my time in graduate school. Ever since the 2017 G20 protests in Hamburg, when Trump, Putin and other world leaders met for the first time, followed by the atrocities in Charlottesville, VA, my work continues to criticize socio-cultural hierarchies, especially about organized religion, systemic racism, and economic oppression.
Jonathan Pattiwael’s choreographies and performances have been commissioned and produced by REST Fest by the Theorists, the Ohio Dance Festival, Austin Dance Project, Texas Woman’s University, FRESH Festival (Now KH Fresh Festival San Francisco), DJ Kid Cut, Kieler Woche, Texas Christian’s University, Heroes Rise Street Dance Academy, Tesla’s SpaceX Station, Urban Creative Arts and Healing Symposium, Xavier University, American College Dance Association, Texas Dance Improvisation Festival, Regional Dance America, Onyx Contemporary Dance Company, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC), SXSW, Alamo Drafthouse, Opening Door Dance Theatre and Festival Dança Contemporânea.
